A Lot of Your “Ideal Future” Is Happening Right Now
"A lot of my ideal future is happening right now."
These words stopped me in my tracks during a recent coaching session. We were taking stock of my client's accomplishments, looking back at their resolutions from the beginning of 2024, when this profound realization emerged.
As we sat there, going through their journey, the evidence was undeniable. Goals that had seemed almost too ambitious to write down - even ones they'd felt embarrassed to put on paper - had somehow manifested. Not always in the ways they'd expected, but they were there, hidden in plain sight.
Projects they once dreamed of working on? They're doing them now. Rates they thought were years away? They're charging them today. The studio setup they envisioned? It's slowly but surely coming together, piece by piece. Everything they'd written down in January, even the things that felt too audacious to say out loud, had materialized - just not always through the front door they'd been watching.
This moment with my client made me reflect on how often we might be missing the evidence of our own progress. We're so focused on the horizon that we don't notice how far we've walked. We're so busy planning the next step that we forget to recognize we're already on the path we dreamed about.
Looking back at this year, it's striking how transformation rarely arrives as a dramatic before-and-after moment. Instead, it sneaks in gradually, often through side doors we didn't even know existed. Sometimes the "stupid" goals - the ones we're almost embarrassed to write down - are actually the most important ones to acknowledge. They represent our truest desires, unfiltered by practicality or self-doubt.
For the mix engineers reading this at the end of 2024, I want you to take a moment. Stop. Look around your studio. Think about your current projects. Your clients. Your rates. Your skills. How many pieces of what you once considered your "ideal future" are actually present in your life right now?
Maybe you're already:
Working with artists you once only dreamed about
Using techniques you thought were years away from mastering
Charging rates you previously thought impossible
Running sessions with a confidence you couldn't imagine before
Making decisions that used to paralyze you
The future doesn't arrive all at once, and it rarely arrives exactly as planned. It shows up in pieces, in small moments, in quiet victories that we might miss if we're too focused on our preconceived notions of how things should unfold.
As we wrap up this year, I encourage you to review those resolutions you wrote down in January. Look especially for the ones that came true in unexpected ways. Notice the goals you achieved through paths you couldn't have predicted. Acknowledge the progress that snuck in while you were busy making other plans.
Yes, keep dreaming big. Keep pushing forward. Keep writing down those goals that feel almost too ambitious to say out loud - especially the ones that feel too audacious to share. And as you write your resolutions for 2025, remember this moment of recognition from my client.
Because a year from now, you might just find yourself looking back, amazed at how many pieces of your ideal future were already playing out in real-time - even if they arrived wearing different clothes than you imagined.
Your future isn't just coming - in many ways, it's already here. Sometimes we just need to pause long enough to recognize it.
