About
Michael J. Morgan
Business coach for mix engineers. Creator of The Business of Mixing framework.
I'm not a mixer who backed into business coaching. I built this on purpose, over years, from the outside in.
My background isn't audio. It's product. I spent years inside corporate as a product developer, researcher, designer, and eventually manager. Then I left, and brought all of it with me: the user-research instinct, the systems thinking, the discipline of looking at patterns rather than reacting to anecdotes.
That training landed in the audio industry through brand work. I worked with PMC, Oeksound, and a handful of smaller audio companies. What I was actually doing under the surface was customer research. I sat in hundreds of conversations with the engineers those companies serve. I saw how they priced, how they pitched, how they scoped, how they failed. I watched the ones who were crushing it operate differently from the ones who weren't.
The patterns were remarkably consistent. The problems were almost never about talent. They were about positioning, pipeline, and pricing.
I did record and produce local bands very early on, so I know what it feels like to be in the chair. But I never did music professionally, and I don't claim to be a mixing teacher. My world is the business around the craft, not the craft itself.
Since 2019, I've translated those patterns into a system mix engineers can actually use. The Business of Mixing is the result. Five pillars, twelve interconnected systems, and the thing nobody teaches you at any school or studio: how to turn technical skill into a sustainable business.
I've now had over 3,000 one-on-one conversations with audio professionals across 40+ countries. The pattern recognition has only gotten sharper.
What I do not teach
I don't touch your craft. That's yours.
I'm not the person to teach you EQ, compression, mix-bus chains, monitoring, or how to listen. There are dozens of brilliant people for that, and you should learn from them.
I teach what happens around the work. Pricing. Positioning. Pipeline. Scoping. The conversations you have with clients and the systems that hold them together. The business that decides whether your craft pays you what it's worth.
If you already know how to mix, I help you get paid properly for it.
